Another wannabe....I liked the idea of a common little horse aspiring to Stubbsian glory!
Some recent reading recommendations:
'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' Shirley Jackson, Penguin Modern Classics; '50s...from the author of 'The Haunting of Hill House'. Quite extraordinary. Flawed but compelling.
'The Death of Grass', 1956, John Christopher. Post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi...but more of a ' Lord of the Flies'...horribly plausible.
'She's Come Undone' , Wally Lamb. Brilliant 'autobiography' of the superbly envisioned character - Dolores. Mid/lowbrow but utterly compulsive reading. I 'lost' a few hours to this book and took a while to realise that I was not in Dolores' world.
