I am sick of feeding 30 odd pheasants who rock up to ram their gizzards full of corn meant for the peacocks and Little ( the last remaining Citron Millefleur Sablepoot!) so I now have both of the BG's air rifles close by and a tin of rather beautifully-crafted pointy .22 pellets. This morning, at rush hour gobbling time, I loaded one of the guns and went to the front door. Dear Reader, I am afraid that I just could not do it. I want them dead but I don't want to be the one to dispatch them*. I fired the gun into the bushes and then suffered agonies wondering where Caramac was, in case he was holed up in that very bit of blackthorn....Well, he wasn't, of course. The pheasants were deterred for about half of a half of a nano second and were straight back. Very annoying.
I am sure , however, that there is an important moral lesson in that feeling*, and I don't think the parallels in the human world are very attractive......
Why am I Such an Oxy Moron?

I know you will not listen BUT here are your options/solutions.
ReplyDelete1. You MUST NOT fire pellets into animals as usually they do not drop dead but run off and die an awful death (lead poisoning, infection).
2. Feed you peacocks in a "Scarecrow" erected area. The peas will get used to it but the daft pheasants won't.
3. Get a nice shotgun - .410 is easy to use and good for a 20 yard killing.
4. Sign up for my special course entitled "How to get over most phobias". It is free but involves a weekend in a nice seaside hotel.
Toodle pip.
No 2 is a great suggestion..and you are right about 1...awful. 3 is sensible but involves all sorts of trouble like licences and gun cabinets and 4...well, I live by the sea (almost!) anyway!
ReplyDeleteI take out half a dozen at a time. In my class 150 diesel train on the Barnstaple line. The buzzards love me.
ReplyDeleteMemo to self: buy a diesel!
ReplyDeleteWaking up to find 30 pheasants in the back garden is my idea of heaven.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how big your garden is but Lexander is probably right - a .410 (ideally with a sound moderator) would be enough to help you start filling the freezer.
I'm sure you are right, Lakers....I'd need a bit if tuition...
