'Jerusalem', Apollo Theatre
Make no mistake, Mark Rylance deserves every accolade he gets. His performance of Johnny 'Rooster'
Byron is utterly mesmerising...one of, if not THE, best performances I have ever seen of anybody in anything ( get the picture?!). The play itself is far from flawless..and any interchange that does not directly involve Johnny fails to convince in quite the same way, but it is high impact...not least because of the barrage of F and C words. Strangely, these give no offence until used with venom and rancour...otherwise they seem like the rather quaint OE words they are!
F and C words still have the power to be edgy. Personally I think it's a cheap stunt and would he have been able to emote quite so well without it. I wonder what a close up Olivier performance would have been like. Mesmerising and edifying at the same time I should think.
ReplyDeleteActually, E-K, the F and C words as spoken by Mark R and Mackenzie Crook came over very much as wiltshire vernacular and did not seem like a cheap stunt at all...it was the threatening bloke who brought an ugly dimension to it...and also a reminder of the cheapness you refer to...interesting.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know F and C was peculiar to the Wiltshire dialect.
ReplyDeletePerhaps that's why I was disappointed when I visited with my Star Trekkie mates - there was nothing to C because there was no F in crop circles !
Ooooh Arrrr.
I've dedicated a post to you, Foxy.
