How to eradicate chippiness and insecurity? Is it possible?
I listened with despair to an interview with a headmistress in a northern comprehensive. Hardly any of the children at her school, however able , would consider applying to a 'toff' university. She said that as soon as they heard so much as a whisper of Standard English, they would bridle. Images of big houses and silver spoons popped straight into their minds. What is more, it would be considered an unforgivable act of betrayal to join 'Them' and go to one of the older universities. The child could never expect to step back into their old life/circle of friends as they would be regarded as class traitors. Education is totally 'uncool'. To opt to work hard in an academic context is to sign one's own social death warrant. 'Nothing has changed in the last 20 years', she reflected, despondently...despite her efforts to develop the potential she identified in many of her pupils. When push came to shove, they just would not take the chance and risk being ostracised.
Prejudice is everywhere. I have felt as much of a victim of it , in a way, as any minority group. First, the voice. Instant assumption of privilege. Yeah, right! Then the education. More of the same. How is this to be overcome? I and many of my peers have found our cvs a barrier to employment. We are 'over-qualified'; make people feel inferior/inadequate etc..First words from very nice English teacher giving me a day in his school...'I went to a redbrick, I am afraid.'
I am told by some that until schools like Colyton Grammar cease to exist and friends stop breaking their balls putting their children through private school rather than sacrificing them to lowest common denominator peer pressure, class mobility will never happen. But 'WE' are not in the business of keeping people 'out'. We don't even know where ' in' is! 'THEY' are determined to stay 'out' and smash the concept of an elite (which is selective, yes, but also utterly indifferent to anything other than merit and shared values which are the criteria for selection).
'If I can't have it, nobody can' is a sad, sad mantra....especially when you CAN have it if you are prepared to work for what is offered.....Yes..the sting in the tail for the instant gratification/celebrity junkies...if you WORK for it..

A brilliant comment. I agree entirely.
ReplyDeleteThis is a country in self-destruct mode.
I don't want to labour on it ... have been banging away about it on John Redwood's site for the past few weeks and am so bloody tired of it.
I cannot believe David Cameron. What an arsehole.
How did these people get such power ?
